A Glimpse of Our Changing World!

Presented at the A-PAD International Symposium 2023, this powerful video sheds light on the undeniable truth: our planet is undergoing rapid, drastic changes due to climate change. It's a wake-up call and an invitation to join hands and forge a path towards a climate-resilient tomorrow.

The harsh reality of melting ice caps, intensifying natural disasters, and vanishing species isn't just a series of disconnected events; it's a story of a world crying out for change. Through captivating visuals and compelling data, this video drives home the immediacy and scale of the challenge ahead.

But amidst the concerning truths, there is hope. With "Climate-Smart Collaboration Accelerating Transition Towards a Climate-Resilient Tomorrow" as our guiding theme, the A-PAD International Symposium urges us to recognize that the solutions lie in unity, knowledge, innovation, and collective action.
The Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Sri Lanka (A-PAD SL) hosted its annual International Symposium on the 30th of August,2022, critically assessing the issues at hand in the country and highlighting positive future prospects that can be worked towards, while placing emphasis on how disaster risk reduction can be given more prominence in the process. Under the theme "Crisis in Crises: Unlocking the Power of Alliances Towards Innovative Recovery", the Symposium brought together leading figures and international experts from different sectors to engage in a constructive dialogue on cross-sectoral collaboration between the public and private sectors and how these alliances can be utilized to facilitate innovative recovery and build stronger institutions for the future.
The annual Search and Rescue Swift Water Level 01 training organized by A-PAD SL was held from the 27th - 30th September 2022 at the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, Embilipitiya. 

Supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan, through their Overseas Development Assistance (ODA),  a cohort of 28 civil and military personnel both male and female were awarded with an international SAR Swift Water level 01 certification in the presence of H.E Mr MIZUKOSHI Hideaki, the Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka and Maj. Gen Sudantha Ranasinghe, the Director General of the Disaster Management Centre Sri Lanka.

The first Panel was titled “Revive and Reset: Resilient Recovery as a Counterbalance to Multi-Dimensional Crisis” and  focused on the local context in Sri Lanka and how effectively resilient recovery can act as a counterbalance to multi-dimensional crises. The panelists who spoke during the session included Major General (Rtd)Sudantha Ranasinghe, RWP, RSP, MSc, ndu, psc - Director General, Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Mr. Rohan Amirthiah, Managing Director, Wurth Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Suranga Ratnayake, Vice President / Chief operating Officer, Aitken Spence Travels, Dr. Megumi Kuwana, Ph.D, Associate Professor, Faculty of International Studies, Kindai University, Osaka Japan, Ms. Florian Rhiza, Network Coordination Specialist, OCHA-UNDP Connecting Business Initiative (CBi) | Geneva, Switzerland and Mr. Dhananath Fernando, Chief Operating Officer, Advocata Institute.<br /><br />Panelists in the second discussion spoke about regional perspectives on robust economic action, under the title “Regaining Reserves: A Regional Perspective on Robust Economic Action”. The panelists included Dr. Anila Dias Bandaranaike, Former Assistant Governor, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Mr. Mark Surgenor, CEO, HSBC Sri Lanka & Maldives, Prof. Buddhi Marambe, Senior Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Mr. Masataka Uo, Director - Strategic Planning, Networking and Development, A-PAD International Japan, Ms. Dhashma Karunaratne, COO, Freight Segment / Assistant Vice President - Maritime & Freight Logistics Sector, Aitken Spence PLC, Ms. Amanthi Perera, Head - Social Sustainability, MAS Holdings.  <br /><br />The certification award ceremony for the A-PAD Search and Rescue Rope Rescue Technical Training, Level 1 was also carried out during the Symposium. 14 Search and Rescue team members received both a nationally and internationally recognized certification, following the Rope Rescue Training programme which was held recently.
As part of A-PAD Sri Lanka’s Search and Rescue (SAR) initiative, a seven-day “Rope Rescue Technical Training” programme was conducted. A-PAD SL facilitated 7 professional rope rescue trainers from Japan and Taiwan to carry out the programme for 14 civilian participants from private sector organizations, Sri Lanka Lifesaving and Adventure sports representatives.

The intense training involved the participants learning the intricate technicalities of rope rescue operations. This included being educated on all different types of equipment and how to use them, the several different types of knot techniques to be used and when to use them, how to ascend and descend from a rope, the particular rig and anchor systems to use, as well as how to properly attend to a victim and carry out a rope rescue using a stretcher. In addition to gaining critical individual skills and knowledge, participants were also taught how to work effectively as a team in conducting rope rescues. The team also had to successfully perform a simulated rope rescue operation across a river. 

On the last day of training, each participant was tested on the skills gained during the course of the week. Upon passing their tests, the participants received an internationally recognized Rope Rescue Level 1 Certification.
In collaboration with Sri Lanka Life Saving (SLLS), the Asia-Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management (A-PAD) Sri Lanka held a CPR Training Course at its headquarters in Colombo on the 5th of July, 2022.

The training was conducted under A-PAD’s Search and Rescue (SAR) initiative for 30 participants from private sector organizations, as well as search and rescue representatives and volunteers. Technical expertise for the training was provided by Mr. Asanka Nanayakkara (President, SLLS) and Mr. Samith Thilina (Trainer/Senior Instructor, SLLS), who carried out both theoretical and practical training sessions. 

A-PAD facilitates these CPR Training courses with the overall objective to sensitize and ensure that all the participants involved can provide vital assistance in the event of any disaster, occupational hazard or community emergency. Once the participants had completed the training programme, they were awarded an internationally recognized license and certification.
A-PAD Bangladesh in partnership with Community Initiative Society (CIS) and Dhaka Community Hospital Trust (DCHT) provided significant means for the procurement of pediatric oncology priorities, with special consideration for the health and safety of the children of Sri Lanka.  This gesture of goodwill was coordinated by A-PAD Sri Lanka and facilitated by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in consultation with the Ministry of Health.

A-PAD Bangladesh representatives handed over the consignment of vital and essential medicine to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat for use by hospitals directed by the Ministry of Health.  

In view of this occasion, representatives from A-PAD Bangladesh, CIS and DCHT, visited the country while also present were Mr. Palitha Wickramage from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Maj. Gen. Sudantha Ranasinghe - Director General, DMC, and Mr. Firzan Hashim - Country Director, A-PAD SL.
