For many people, home is also where they work, earn and run a business. When a disaster hits a home, it hits a livelihood too.

A safe home protects people and home-based livelihoods. A prepared business keeps working and keeps people employed. Together, they build a community that recovers faster.

Businesses can help by:
- Disclosing known disaster and climate risks
- Making a business continuity plan, including for small and women-led enterprises
- Backing affordable insurance and finance for households

Resilient homes build resilient workplaces, and resilient workplaces build resilient communities.

Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction!
This year’s theme is “Resilience Starts at Home.”

Disasters don’t just destroy buildings. They destroy lives, livelihoods and futures. Resilience at home is not a luxury. It is a right, a responsibility and an investment.

A-PAD SL joins partners worldwide in calling for safe, inclusive and affordable homes for everyone.

What are you doing to make your home safer?

Homes are where we live, sleep and care for one another. How they are planned, built, financed and maintained decides whether risk is reduced or created.

This year’s theme is “Resilience Starts at Home.”

No one should have to choose between an affordable home and a safe one.

The unveiling of the sustainable awareness placard

The unveiling of the sustainable awareness placards along Beira Lake, was initiated by the Beira Lake Restoration Task Force who share commitment to its restoration. Under the Clean Waterways Programme, we’re working to improve water quality and help Colombo’s iconic lake thrive as a transport and economic hub. Protecting our waterways is everyone’s responsibility.

The history of Beira Lake

Beneath Beira Lake’s calm surface lies a story of war, resistance and colonial ambitions.

In 1587, King Sitawaka Rajasinghe I besieged the Portuguese-held Colombo Fort, but the lake and its marshes stood in his way. His answer was to drain the lake. Disease eventually weakened his army and he withdrew, but the lake stayed. Today it is a reminder of the island’s resilience, its history and the people who shaped it.

Cleaner lake, healthier city

Beira Lake is not just a lake. It is a home for wildlife, a source of life for our city and a place for future generations.

Did you know a plastic bottle can take around 450 years to decompose, and a glass bottle up to a million? Litter disrupts ecosystems, harms aquatic life, and microplastics can end up in our food chain. A cleaner lake means a healthier city.

Every piece of litter you don’t drop makes a difference.

Past. Present. Future.

Beira Lake was once a clean, vibrant place for communities, nature and connection. Pollution, overuse and neglect have taken a toll, but the lake is not lost. It is calling for change. With cleaner waters and greener spaces, we can bring back thriving biodiversity and a lake for generations to come.

What future do you want for Beira Lake?
