International DRR Day: ‘Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future’
The International Disaster Risk Reduction Day marks the importance of minimizing the impact of disasters on communities and fostering a culture of disaster risk awareness and reduction. This year’s theme “‘Empowering the next generation for a resilient future” emphasizes the importance of familiarizing children and the youth on the aspects of DRR.
Empowering children and youth as key players in disaster risk reduction not only equips them with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and their communities but also transforms them into passionate advocates for a safer, more resilient future—because the voices of the young today will shape the safety of the world tomorrow.
Marking the IDRRD for 2024, here are impactful initiatives implemented by A-PAD to instill a culture of strength and resilience among the future generation of Sri Lanka.
A Prepared School is A Safe School
The concept of safe schools is built around the pillars of ensuring safer school facilities, implementing effective school safety and educational continuity management, and promoting risk reduction and resilience education.
One of the key initiatives carried out by A-PAD is its Safe School Program, primarily geared towards disaster-prone and vulnerable communities that are impacted the most by natural disasters and man-made crises. It includes comprehensive training programs, which encompass Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) lessons, basic CPR training, education on climate change, and essential life-saving techniques. In addition to building technical skills, the training programs also foster a sense of empowerment and community resilience.

Strengthening Disaster Resilience Among the Youth
A-PAD SL also carries forth a strong partnership with University of Colombo (UoC) to deliver impactful disaster risk reduction programs aimed at empowering youth with essential skills, including CPR and first aid training. This collaboration not only enhances their preparedness for emergencies but also fosters a sense of responsibility and community engagement.
In addition to technical skills, A-PAD SL has also organized art exhibitions focused on climate resilience and tsunami awareness, encouraging the undergraduates to convey important messages using creativity. These initiatives not only educate young people about the risks they face but also inspire them to become advocates for change, promoting a culture of safety and resilience in their communities.
A-PAD’s commitment to community empowerment extends beyond a one-time training session. By establishing lasting partnerships with educational institutions across the island, A-PAD ensures the sustainability and long-term effectiveness of its initiatives. With ongoing support, follow-up sessions, and access to resources, A-PAD helps communities develop resilience and adaptability in challenging situations.
