A-PAD Supports Flood-affected Communities in Neelabemma, Puttalam
In its relief distribution efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, A-PAD Sri Lanka prioritised reaching areas where needs were most acute and assistance was urgently required. With the support of Capital Maharaja Group (CMG) through its Sahana Yatra Initiative and coordination with the local authorities in the Karuwalagaswewa Divisional Secretariat, Neelabemma was identified as one of the hardest-hit communities.
The three Grama Niladhari divisions in Neelabemma—Pahala Puliyankulama, Saaliyawewa, and Moonamal Gaswewa—were prioritised for support due to the severity of housing damage, livelihood loss, and prolonged disruption to basic services. Many families in these areas were living in temporary shelters or partially damaged homes and had received limited assistance in the days following the floods.
To respond to these needs, A-PAD SL distributed 500 emergency food packs for children, 250 female hygiene kits, 250 male hygiene kits, and 150 baby hygiene kits, addressing immediate nutritional, hygiene, and infant care requirements. All items were procured and prepared in line with NDRSC standards to ensure quality, relevance, and dignity. Despite damaged roads and restricted access, the relief items were transported to Neelabemma and distributed from the Veherabendigala Rajamaha Viharasthaanaya, with prior coordination ensuring an orderly and dignified process.
The impact of the assistance was immediate. Families shared that the food packs and hygiene items were essential during a period when clean water, sanitation, and income sources were severely limited. Beneficiaries spoke of losing their homes entirely and spending days awaiting rescue, noting that the relief provided offered not only practical support but reassurance during a time of profound uncertainty. Through this intervention, A-PAD SL was able to reach some of the most affected households and stand in solidarity with communities as they begin the path toward recovery.
