A-PAD Sri Lanka Participates in Anticipatory Action Training Programme

As Anticipatory Action (AA) continues to take shape as a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s disaster risk reduction landscape, A-PAD joined fellow members of the Sri Lanka National Anticipatory Action Working Group (SL-AAWG) for a three-day capacity development training held from 23 to 25 June 2026 at the Sheraton Colombo Hotel.

Organized by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in collaboration with the SL-AAWG, and supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the training was facilitated by the Asia-Pacific Anticipatory Action Working Group. It brought together officers from working group member organizations to build a harmonized, shared understanding of AA as it continues to evolve within the national disaster management framework.

Over the three days, sessions focused on distinguishing AA from preparedness and response, understanding the Government’s position on operationalizing the approach, and strengthening knowledge of minimum technical standards across multiple hazard types. A central outcome of the training was progress toward contextualizing and developing national Technical Standards for Anticipatory Action – a foundation intended to eventually inform administrative training curricula and support the piloting of AA approaches in selected areas across the country.

For A-PAD Sri Lanka, participation in the training reinforced the organization’s ongoing commitment to multi-stakeholder disaster risk reduction and its role within the national AA ecosystem.
