A-PAD SL Conducts Swift Water Search and Rescue Refresher Training at Weerawila Lake
Anticipating increased flood risks with the approaching monsoon season, the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Sri Lanka (A-PAD SL) conducted a Swift Water Search and Rescue Skill Elevation Training on April 10, 2026, at Weerawila Lake in Weerawila, Tissamaharama in partnership with Capital Maharaja Group (CMG) and Gammadda. The initiative forms part of A-PAD SL’s ongoing efforts to proactively strengthen national readiness for floods.
Bringing together certified SAR responders from diverse sectors, the training emphasized real-time decision-making, team coordination, and operational efficiency in dynamic water environments. The program placed strong focus on scenario-based drills, simulating unpredictable flood conditions to better prepare responders for on-ground realities and responding to distress calls effectively.
Participants engaged in intensive practical exercises, testing rescue techniques, equipment handling, and communication under pressure. The training reinforced critical safety protocols while building confidence among responders to operate effectively in high-risk situations.
Importantly, the training extended beyond just engaging in drills to support a community-centered activity in the area organized by Gammadda initatiative. The community members were also taught the importance of following safety measures when in water. This dual approach not only strengthened technical capacity but also underscored the importance of community engagement in disaster preparedness.
As a country frequently impacted by seasonal flooding, Sri Lanka requires sustained investment in preparedness and response capabilities. Through initiatives such as this, A-PAD SL continues to enhance a multi-sectoral SAR network aligned with international standards, while promoting strong coordination between civil and military stakeholders.
