A-PAD SL Conducts Swift Water Search and Rescue Skill Elevation Training
In a demonstration of resilience, preparedness, and community service, the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Sri Lanka (A-PAD SL) successfully conducted its Swift Water Search and Rescue Skill Elevation Training on April 5, 2025, at Kala Wewa, Galnewa in the Anuradhapura District. This initiative was carried out in anticipation of the upcoming southwest monsoon season, with a focus on sharpening the skills of rescuers and reinforcing lifesaving protocols.
Since 2017, A-PAD SL has consistently invested in developing the capacities of local search and rescue teams through internationally recognized swift water training programs. The 2025 Skill Elevation Training marked another milestone in this journey—bringing together 12 committed participants from both Level 1 and Level 2 cohorts representing the private sector, public sector, and the civil society. These individuals, already trained in foundational techniques, took their expertise to the next level with advanced swift water rescue and rope rescue drills.
The training emphasized critical rescue techniques including IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) maneuvers, surfboard rescue operations, effective use of Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), team positioning during high-risk scenarios, and coordinated operations among SAR teams. Through rigorous hands-on sessions and real-time deployment simulations, participants not only improved their technical abilities but also built trust, leadership, and rapid decision-making skills essential during crisis response.
In a unique move that blended training with community impact, A-PAD SL integrated its deployment exercise into a community-focused program organized by the Sirasa TV, also held in Galnewa. This engagement allowed the rescue teams to apply their freshly honed skills in a real-world context—providing essential safety support during a local water sports event, and ensuring the wellbeing of the participants.
This mission was made possible thanks to the generous support of our partners, including Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC and Sirasa TV, whose collaboration played a key role in the successful execution of this life-saving initiative. By prioritizing safety, professionalism, and community-centered disaster preparedness, A-PAD SL continues to empower local rescuers to meet the challenges of an increasingly climate-impacted world. The 2025 Skill Elevation Training not only enhanced technical competence but reinforced a shared commitment: to save lives, protect communities, and rise stronger together.
