Effective Citizen-Led Humanitarian Support for Flood-Affected Families, Dematagoda

Dec 2, 2025

‍Sri Lanka continues to recover from the devastating impacts of Cyclone Ditwah, which displaced thousands and left communities in urgent need of assistance. Responding to this crisis, A-PAD Sri Lanka worked closely with the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat and the Grama Niladari, to identify affected families in Dematagoda who were unable to access basic meals due to flooding and sudden evacuation. With the support of compassionate citizens, on 30th November 2025, 250 snack packs were prepared and distributed—first at the temporary safety centre at “Sama Viharaya” and then directly to households within the flooded lanes of Dematagoda.

This timely intervention ensured that over 200 people received essential meals during a critical period, demonstrating the power and effectiveness of citizen-led humanitarian action. Discussions with affected residents also highlighted key concerns around safety, reluctance to evacuate due to theft, and urgent needs such as clothing, bedding, and dry rations. The coordinated efforts of local communities continue to bridge immediate gaps, ensuring that the most basic needs of the affected families are met.
