Private Sector Engages in Disaster Preparedness Dialogue in Balangoda
A-PAD engaged Balangoda’s private sector in a proactive approach towards disaster preparedness, convening representatives well-versed in the region’s susceptibility to floods, landslides, winds, lightning, droughts, and wildfires on the 16th of July. Mr. Nimal Ganithage, Disaster Relief Service Officer at Balangoda’s National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC), highlighted a notable decrease in landslides in 2024 compared to 2023. He underscored the impact of climate change on rainfall patterns, resulting in irregular occurrences of floods and droughts across Rathnapura District.
The significance of disaster management for the private sector lies in safeguarding business continuity and reducing financial losses amid natural disasters. Ms. Patabendige from A-PAD emphasized the critical need for private sector entities to understand and mitigate these risks. A-PAD’s role in facilitating resilience-building initiatives was highlighted, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts between public and private sectors. Discussions centered on enhancing response capabilities through targeted disaster risk reduction (DRR) training, supported by Ms. Mahakumbura from MAS Kreeda.
The event concluded with A-PAD exploring the possibility of conducting DRR training in Balangoda, specifically tailored for the private sector. Participants expressed gratitude for the informative session and optimism about improving disaster resilience within their communities and ensuring sustainable business operations.
