A-PAD SL Search & Rescue (SAR) team conducted a Rope Rescue refresher training on the 4th September 2026 at the A-PAD SL office premises. The training was one of the monthly refreshers the team conducts to maintain the efficiency and accuracy of their trainings.

Team was able to apply pre-learned basic rope rescue safety procedures, ascending and descending refreshers and as well as high-rise rescue techniques. The training also included a session on the proper maintenance of equipment and personal safety.

Aviation as a Lifeline: Airlink Panel in Singapore Spotlights the Power of Collaboration in Disaster Response across the Asia Pacific
At the Airlink panel in Singapore, Mr. Firzan Hashim, Country Director of A-PAD Sri Lanka, highlighted how pre-established partnerships, airline support, and coordinated logistics can translate into faster and more effective disaster response.

Drawing from A-PAD Sri Lanka’s experience during Cyclone Ditwah, he emphasized the critical role of collaboration across government, the private sector, humanitarian organisations, and the aviation industry. When airlines make cargo space available for humanitarian relief, and Airlink coordinates the logistics to move that assistance where it is needed, critical supplies can reach affected communities faster.

For A-PAD Sri Lanka, effective disaster response depends on strong partnerships built before a crisis. From mobilising resources to coordinating transport and ensuring assistance reaches the last mile, every link in the response chain matters.

For airlines, even available cargo space can become a lifeline. For humanitarian actors, effective coordination turns that capacity into timely assistance. Together, they can help move relief faster to the people who need it most.

Because the partnerships that enable a rapid response are built long before disaster strikes.

Drowning can happen silently and fast — but knowing what to do in the water can save your life.

Flip, Float, and Follow:

Flip onto your back if you get into trouble

Float — keep your head above water, stay calm, and conserve energy

Follow the safest path to safety — don’t fight the current, swim perpendicular to it, and signal for help if you’re too tired to continue

⚠️ Know the real signs of drowning — it rarely looks like splashing and shouting: Facing the shore • Mouth at water level • Head tilted back • Body upright in the water • A climbing-ladder motion with the arms

Experience the highlights of the Joint Indo-Pacific Rope Rescue & Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Training 2025

This video showcases an intensive, hands-on training programme co-hosted by A-PAD in partnership with Taiwan’s National Fire Agency (NFA). From advanced rope rescue systems and shoring to concrete extrication, search technologies, and a full-scale earthquake response simulation, participants were pushed to operate under realistic, high-pressure scenarios.

More than a training, this programme represents a shared commitment to regional cooperation, professional excellence, and saving lives—strengthening disaster preparedness across the Indo-Pacific.

A-PAD International Symposium 2025

Five days after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, GEA supported by A-PAD International arrived in response to an international call for assistance. In Naypyidaw, a 26-year-old hotel staff member was rescued from the rubble of the Aye Chan Thar Hotel. The survivor was safely evacuated and is reported to be in good health.

Accredited by the United Nations INSARAG and AFAD, GEA is a Turkish search and rescue NGO and has been a close partner of A-PAD since 2016.

Check out the highlights from the 2024 Joint Indo-Pacific Region Swift Water and Rope Rescue Training Program, where 14 members of Sri Lanka’s A-PAD Search and Rescue team teamed up with rescue personnel from Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Co-hosted by Taiwan’s National Fire Agency and A-PAD, and supported by the Connecting Business Initiative (CBi), this two-week intensive training pushed participants to their limits in some of the most challenging environments.

Led by internationally certified trainers, the program featured rigorous swift water rescue exercises followed by advanced rope rescue techniques, essential for both survival and emergency rescue operations. This hands-on training goes beyond skill-building—it's about strengthening regional cooperation, enhancing disaster preparedness, and ensuring that when the next crisis strikes, our teams are ready to respond, together.

20 Years of Tsunami: A-PAD Symposium - Reflecting on Impact and Building Resilience

The Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Sri Lanka held its annual international symposium under the theme "Turning the Tide: 20 Years of Tsunami Readiness and Resilience" to commemorate two decades since the tragic 2004 tsunami. This event brought together nearly 200 participants, including diplomats, international organizations, the private and public sectors, NGOs, and the UN.

The symposium provided a platform to reflect on lessons learned, assess current disaster preparedness, and discuss future strategies for enhancing resilience. It also marked the 10-year anniversary of A-PAD Sri Lanka, celebrating a decade of dedicated disaster response and humanitarian efforts.
